Recreational fisheries
Recreational fisheries are defined as fishing of aquatic animals that does not constitute an individual’s primary resource to meet basic nutritional needs and are not generally sold
Although a majority of our lab's research focuses on commercial fisheries, we also conduct some research on recreational fisheries. Much of this work, up until now, has been done in collaboration with an international research group focused on developing and applying an angler survey database in the US, known as CreelCat. This research has resulted in the development of the world's largest database on creel surveys for inland recreational fisheries, and has improved our understanding of levels of recreational fishing effort, catch, and harvest as well as how those fisheries may be affected by climate change.
