Sand lance
Sand lance are a forage fish that inhabit sandy sediment and are likely a critically important prey in Newfoundland, but they are understudied
Our lab created a novel method for tracking changes in prey population size using predator diet data and applied this method to sand lance on the Newfoundland Grand Banks. This model identified that the sand lance population has fluctuated over time, similar to other forage fish in the area, indicating that there may be shared environmental drivers for local forage fish populations. We have also identified that cod body condition may vary in response to changes in sand lance population size, indicating that sand lance are an important prey for cod.
