Reflection On a Summer Internship

Working as a student in the FESA lab this summer has been such a rewarding experience for me. Under the guidance of Dr. Matthew Robertson, I dove headfirst into researching the unique phenomenon of capelin beach spawning in Newfoundland and the complex factors driving reproductive output. This position gave me the opportunity to learn more about this important forage species, to further refine my approach to data management, and to develop new skills in the realm of statistical analysis, data exploration, and generalized linear mixed effects modelling. The work environment was very positive and welcoming, and I met many inspiring individuals in the field and office alike, where discussions of shared interests have developed into friendships and many snorkeling adventures off the clock. Overall, I am grateful for the experience and connections I gained here as an early-career scientist and highly recommend checking out any opportunities to work in Matt’s lab.
